🪓 Why We're Here: Trails After Fire

In 2023, the Trestle Creek drainage burned.
Like many North Idaho fires, it didn’t make national news. But for those of us who know these trails by heart, the loss was devastating.

Today, trails like 120, 55, 67, and 488 are buried in downfall. Wildlife corridors are blocked. What used to be a backcountry artery—for recreation, yes, but also for ecosystem health and cultural use—is impassable.

That’s why the Northern Rockies Trail Project (NRTP) exists.

We don’t stop fire. We can’t change what’s been lost.
But we can roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Thanks to a $40,000 RAC grant, we’ll be heading back into Trestle Creek next spring to start clearing the trails that connect this landscape and its people. It’s not glamorous work. It’s slow, hard, and deeply rewarding. It’s also just the beginning.
